The Truth About “Clean” Skincare: What Lord & Lily Refuses to Put in Our Formulas

The Truth About “Clean” Skincare: What Lord & Lily Refuses to Put in Our Formulas

Beyond the label. Beyond the marketing. Into what truly matters.

“Clean.” “Natural.” “Safe.” These words are everywhere in skincare today.

But here is the truth: these words do not always guarantee that a product truly supports your skin.

At Lord & Lily, we believe something deeper: a formula is defined not only by what it contains, but by what it refuses to depend on.

Why What You Leave Out Matters

Skincare is not occasional. It is daily, repeated contact with your skin—sometimes for hours at a time.

Your skin responds to the full ingredient system: the pH, the oils, the surfactants, the preservatives, the actives, and the long-term compatibility of the formula.

That is why Lord & Lily takes a disciplined approach to what we do not use.

What Lord & Lily Chooses Not to Use

Harsh Sulfates: SLS, SLES, ALS

These surfactants can create a “squeaky clean” feeling, but often at the cost of the skin barrier. Clean skin should feel balanced, not stripped.

PEG / PPG Systems

Often used as formulation shortcuts, these systems are not aligned with our clean formulation standard.

Parabens & Formaldehyde-Related Systems

Preservatives are necessary, but we choose systems that better align with long-term skin compatibility and modern clean standards.

DEA / MEA / TEA Compounds

Used in some formulas for pH adjustment, these ingredients are not preferred when cleaner alternatives exist.

Phthalates

Often associated with fragrance systems and environmental concerns, phthalates do not align with Lord & Lily’s ingredient philosophy.

The Illusion of Instant Beauty

Some ingredients are widely used not because they truly support the skin, but because they create an immediate sensory effect.

Silicones

Silicones such as dimethicone can create a silky, smooth feel, but they function primarily as a surface coating.

Petroleum-Derived Ingredients

Ingredients such as petroleum jelly and paraffin may create occlusion, but they do not align with our philosophy of skin nourishment and clean responsibility.

Smooth does not always mean supported. Soft does not always mean healthy.

A Thoughtful Approach to Sun Protection

Many conventional sun protection products rely on chemical UV filters. Some of these ingredients have raised ongoing questions related to skin absorption, environmental impact, and long-term daily exposure.

At Lord & Lily, we take a more cautious path. We choose mineral-based protection using non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Daily protection should support both your skin and environmental responsibility.

Our Philosophy: Avoidance Is Not Fear

Avoidance is not about fear. It is about intention.

If a cleaner, more skin-compatible, more responsible alternative exists, Lord & Lily chooses it.

Final Thought

A beautiful product should do more than feel good for five minutes. It should support your skin day after day, use after use.

At Lord & Lily, what we leave out matters as much as what we put in.

Because your skin deserves clarity, integrity, and long-term care.
